Know Your Protest Rights
If you’re going to a protest on Saturday, make sure you’re prepared to take action safely, confidently, and powerfully.
Read our Know Your Rights: Protest Rights resource to brush up on how the First Amendment protects your right to assemble and express your views through protest.
If you're ready to share what you've learned, we’ve created graphics outlining your protest rights that you can download and share on social media. View and download those graphics here.
This collection also includes a graphic that you can download to your phone and save as your lockscreen background — so you can easily see your rights during a protest without unlocking your phone.
Of course, while the right to protest is protected by the Constitution, we’re all too aware that law enforcement and ICE have disregarded our constitutionally protected rights in the past. We hope that these resources will help you and your community advocate for your rights, but we also know that there can be significant daylight between what the law requires and what happens in practice. It’s important to know your rights around lawful protest, and also to know your risks.
A message from the ACLU of Georgia: “Protest does matter”
Feeling nervous about joining a protest? Sarah Hunt-Blackwell from the ACLU of Georgia knows that feeling. The best remedy, she says, is to show up and be in community with other people.
A message from the ACLU of Illinois: “Be a buddy”
Before you head out, Edwin Yohnka from the ACLU of Illinois wants to encourage you to make tomorrow’s events a welcoming, safe, and supportive space for your community.
Your Questions Answered: How to Push Back on Abuses of Power
In his first 9 months back in office, President Donald Trump has abused his power to attack our neighbors and communities, suppress free speech, and create a climate of fear.
With such a constant deluge of attacks on our rights —and on our communities—it can feel difficult to stay hopeful and engaged. But our history shows that when people organize, protest, and demand justice, we can disrupt abuses of power and build collective power in response.
So how exactly do we show up at this moment to defend our freedom? ACLU experts answered five of the most pressing questions we’ve received about how to push back against the Trump administration’s abuses of power.
Join Us for the No Kings National Day of Action
Tomorrow, October 18, is the No Kings National Day of Action. We’ll be out in the streets with communities across the country to condemn President Trump’s escalating abuses of power.
This is an all-hands-on-deck moment. The president and his administration have made it clear that if someone disagrees with the government, that person, organization, or industry will be punished.
They’ve targeted judges by name, detained journalists and protestors, and attacked our civil rights. Enough is enough. They may be trying to crush dissent – but that means we will only get louder.
We’re teaming up with partners to lead a nationwide day of lawful, peaceful protest and ensure that the world knows that we, the people, will hold power to account.

A core principle behind all No Kings events is a commitment to nonviolent and lawful action. We expect all participants to seek to de-escalate any potential confrontation with those who disagree with our values and to act lawfully at these events. Weapons of any kind, including those legally permitted, should not be brought to events.
