The Parents Who Defended Religious Liberty in Public Schools
November 4, 2026
In the 1950s, New York state officials introduced a prayer into public schools. It was optional, it was short, and it was, as the Supreme Court ruled in 1962, unconstitutional. This week, we’re headed to the suburbs to cover that case, Engel v. Vitale. And there, we’ll meet a group of parents who were determined to teach their children — and, ultimately, the nation — that freedom of religion, and freedom from religion, are fundamental rights.
Joining us is Dan Mach, director of the ACLU Program on Freedom of Religion and Belief.
